Member Feature: Aynsley Strong

This month we’ll be doing a series of features on our blog about different Fruit Share members. You may recognize some of them because you’ve picked with them or from their tree. Read on to learn more about one of our Fruit Pickers, Aynsley Strong, and follow the blog to #meetourmembers. You might see them in person on a pick in the near future!

What prompted you to join Fruit Share?
I joined Fruit Share because it seems wrong to let good food go to waste. I like the idea of splitting the produce between the fruit owner, fruit picker, and charitable organizations and/or lower income individuals. I must admit, I also like the price: Free!

Aside from being a Fruit Picker, what do you do?
When I’m not picking fruit, I am working on a vegetable farm with a community shared agriculture program, volunteering as a tutor, studying for my arboriculture course, or accompanying my son to an insane amount of basketball related activities.

How has this year’s Fruit Picking season been treating you?

This season, I have enjoyed the smell of dill hanging to dry in my kitchen. I have seen my counter top cluttered with freshly canned tart apple sauce and tart apple butter. I look forward to adding sweet versions with Tuesday’s pick of Goodland apples (a variety developed in Morden, MB). I am really excited about picking pears this coming weekend as that will be a first for me.

If you could pick with anybody in the world, who would you want to attend a pick with?
If I could pick with anyone in the world, it would be with a team made up of a scientist who could answer my technical questions, an orchard owner who could share what they have learned, and a grandmother who could explain a 101 ways to preserve and store the harvest.

What advice do you have for first time pickers?

My advice to first time pickers is to have a plan for the produce. You’d be surprised how much one tree can produce! I can’t wait to have my home filled with aroma of all the baking to follow this season’s harvest.

Is there anything else you’d like to add?
I feel blessed to be a part of this community network of generous fruit owners and caring pickers. Thank you Fruit Share for all your organization and administrative efforts!
