Spotlight on Fruit Share Steinbach

Steinbach is a growing city, with a thriving surrounding community. What better a place to root another Fruit Share chapter! This is exactly what Rebecca Hiebert did in 2012, and Fruit Share Steinbach has been gaining recognition in the area ever since. I had the opportunity to speak with Rebecca this past week to learn about the exciting events happening this season.

Spotlight on North Point Douglas Women’s Centre

Yet another organization doing great work that would be happy to receive donations of excess fruit.

North Point Douglas Women’s Centre

North Point Douglas Women’s Centre exists to create opportunities for women to develop their potential and engage fully as citizens of their community. Their vision is a safe, healthy, vibrant community for women and families in which all forms of violence against women are addressed by engaging the community in prevention and care.

Donated fruit would be eaten fresh and used for programming in their community kitchen or cooking programs or given out to women as emergency food.

Spotlight on Alpha House

Another idea for a great place to donate extra fruit this season.

Alpha House

Alpha House is a second stage housing program (commonly known as shelter) for women to come, with their children, upon leaving a violent relationship.  It is a residential, independent living program, where women and children can access individual and group counselling, as well as educational resources.

Most of the women at Alpha House have left almost all of their personal belongings and are now living on a very tight budget.  Fresh fruit often becomes a luxury item.  These women would be truly grateful to receive some of the delicious fresh fruit that Manitoba has to offer.
