Strawberries are more than just a sweet and tasty fruit. With strawberry season underway, consider adding these nutritious berries to your daily diet to reap all the health benefits:

1. Antioxidants

Strawberries are rich in antioxidants such as vitamin C and polyphenols. Antioxidants are said to be protective against several diseases, including cancer and stroke. Polyphenols in particular help protect and repair cells in the body. Research has also shown that eating strawberries may play a role in lowering the risk of heart disease, specifically reducing cholesterol and blood pressure. Eat up!

2. Vitamin C

Strawberries are loaded with vitamin C! This important vitamin helps support our immune system, produces collagen to aid with wound healing, and, as mentioned above, it is a powerful antioxidant. One cup of strawberries yields more than enough vitamin C to meet your daily needs.

3. Fibre

Strawberries are good source of fibre thanks to the fruit itself and its seeds. Adding high-fibre foods to your diet can help maintain a healthy digestive system, make you feel full longer, and aid in the prevention of disease such as cancer, heart disease, and diabetes. On average, most adults should aim for 25 – 35 grams of fibre per day. One cup of strawberries has three grams of fibre, getting you well on your way to meeting your goal.

4. Low in calories

Strawberries contain only 50 calories per serving! One serving of strawberries equals one cup or eight medium strawberries. Enjoy strawberries as a light snack or as part of your meal. Try slicing them up and adding them to your cereal, salads, or smoothies!

5. Versatility

There are so many ways that strawberries can be used; the ideas are endless! Strawberries are one of the most versatile fruits, since they can be incorporated into all kinds of different recipes. Try them at breakfast with your oatmeal or in a yogurt parfait. At lunch, strawberries are a fresh dessert and go nicely with a green salad. At dinner, try a strawberry salsa with poultry or pork, and for dessert, add some strawberries into (or on top of!) a tart or shortcake. Buy them fresh or frozen any time of year. Grow them in your garden this year and enjoy!
